Alzheimer's and cancer

A new study suggests Alzheimer's disease may somehow protect against cancer -- and vice versa.

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis looked at a group of over three-thousand people over 65-years-old and followed them for five to eight years.

They found those who already had Alzheimer's disease at the beginning of the study, were almost 70-percent less likely to be hospitalized with cancer than those who didn't have Alzheimer's.

And Caucasians who had cancer at the beginning of the study period were 43-percent less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease -- although this did not hold true for other racial groups.
