Dubuque preps for Christmas snow

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- We've been through this before. Every storm in Dubuque can be trouble. Add the bluffs with icy roads and crews are going to be busy this Christmas.

Just a few days before Christmas and it's easy to tell. Tuesday Tri-States woke up to a few inches of snow. And a two hour delay for most schools.

"Well we're in the process of actually cleaning up the storm that we had overnight," said John Klostermann, with Dubuque Public Works.

Klostermann says snow is pretty much expected this time of year. And his crews are prepared.

"Unfortunately we have enough of work that there won't be a whole lot of waiting," said Klostermann.

But with a projected forecast including ice, snow and rain he says they can't do anything to prevent what's coming.

"Normally we'd be anti icing where we're be spraying salt for icing, use a low corrosive deicer but because of the even being a possible rain event, in addition to snow we don't' be able to do that. It will just dilute that solution down," said Klostermann.

So, as expected, they'll be out the next few days focusing first on clearing the streets. Then on removing the snow.

"Right now if they can get everything off the street we'll respond to any request to widen the streets," said Klostermann.

But the odd/even parking in Dubuque won't go into effect until all the snow has finished falling. Meaning for now you can park on the streets. But he says if at all possible, move your car so that crews can clear the roads.
