Some state offices taking furloughs on Christmas Eve

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- As the state continues to deal with the budget crisis, some state employees will be using Christmas Eve as one of their mandatory furlough days.

The Iowa Secretary of State's Office and the Iowa Department of Public Health Bureau of Vital Statistics will be closed on Thursday, December 24, 2009 for a mandatory unpaid day. 

The Iowa Secretary of State Office will also close Thursday, December 31, 2009 as another unpaid furlough day. 

Both office's will also be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day in observance of those holiday's.

The closings are a result of recent budget cuts that require state employees to take five mandatory unpaid furlough days between now and June 30, 2010.
