Emergency unemployment benefits extended through February

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- There is some good news for those on unemployment as 2010 draws near.

Legislation signed on Tuesday will extend the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Program beyond the original December 31, 2009 end date.

This extension will keep nearly 30,000 Iowans from losing their benefits during the first part of the new year.

The program is now extended through the end of February 2010.

Those on unemployment will need to continue their weekly reporting requirements to receive the benefits.

In all, Iowans are eligible for up to 47 weeks of additional benefits once their initial weeks are exhausted.

Emergency benefits are paid by the federal government and do not affect Iowa's Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund solvency.
