Iowa hires Penn State alum as new V.P.


IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The University of Iowa has hired Penn State alumni as the new Vice President for Strategic Communication.

Tysen Kendig will succeed Jude West who has been the interim vice president since 2008.

Kendig is currently the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Relations at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and was previously the Assistant Director of Public Information at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park.

Kendig says, "My family and I are excited to be returning to Big Ten country, and especially to be joining one of the nation's truly outstanding universities." 

Kendig will be the UI's chief communication officer, reporting to President Sally Mason.

He will be charged with establishing communication plans and policies for the university and offer leadership and counsel on marketing, crisis management and outreach initiatives.

Kendig will also oversee the Office of University Relations, the Center for Media Production, University of Iowa Television, the UI Alumni Association and Hancher Auditorium.

Kendig is a Penn State grad, completed the Harvard University Institute for Management and Leadership in Education and will receive a master's degree in higher education from the University of Arkansas next year.

With the hire, the University of Iowa joins the rest of the Big Ten in appointing a vice president to focus on communication, external relations, and marketing.

Kendig will start February 15, 2010.
