Public Safety closing one State Patrol office

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Public Safety announced Friday that they are closing one state patrol district office.

The District 5 Headquarters Office in Cherokee will close in March 2010.

They say the six counties currently served by District 5 will be divided between the District 4 office in Denison and the District 6 office in Spencer.

Iowa State Patrol Chief, Colonel Patrick Hoye says, "We see this as a win-win. The District 5 Lieutenant and a secretary are planning to retire. The ISP used this opportunity to consolidate district offices and save $25,000 in facility cost and an additional $150,000 a year by not filling vacant positions."

DPS Commissioner Eugene T. Meyer says, "These are difficult budget decisions. Fortunately, by consolidating district offices, DPS help can avoid layoffs. Maintaining public safety is our top priority. This allows us to cut our budget without compromising public safety resources in western Iowa."

Troopers assigned to District 5 will not be laid off and will continue to patrol their assigned counties once the office is closed and consolidated with the other districts.
