Nearsighted study: 41% of Americans

Have trouble seeing far away objects?  You're not alone.

A new study from researchers at the National Eye Institute finds the number of Americans who are nearsighted increased from 25 percent in 1979, to 41 percent in 2004.

Researchers are not sure why cases have spiked, they suspect an increase in "near work," like reading or surfing the web, may be to blame.

They hope to identify the cause soon -- treating nearsightedness costs the U.S. billions of dollars a year.
