Firefighter injured while battling house fire

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Cedar Rapids firefighter was taken to the hospital after he was hurt fighting a house fire on Wednesday.

Fire crews were called to 5330 Harbet Avenue NW in Cedar Rapids at around 3:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

One of the homeowners, 39 year old Tracey Carney, was inside working on her computer when she smelled smoke.  She did some investigating and found a recycling bin on fire in her garage.

Carney got herself, her three dogs and her car out of the garage and then called 9-1-1.

When firefighters arrived, they were able to put out the fire in the garage but then discovered it had spread into the house.

They were able to put the fire inside the house out and keep it from spreading to the second floor, but there was extensive fire, heat and smoke damage to the first floor and the garage.

The other owner of the home, 31-year old James Breedlove and the couple's 4-year old son were not home at the time.

Carney was not injured but a Cedar Rapids firefighter injured his ankle while inside the house.

His condition is not available.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

West Post Road NW was closed for a time while crews battled the blaze.
