Fire still smoldering at Sinclair

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The Cedar Rapids Fire Department remains on scene of the fire at the Sinclair property, 1600 3rd Street SE.

The Fire Department has applied nearly 500,000 gallons of water on the structure throughout the day and will continue extinguishment efforts throughout the night.

Fire crews are working with the demolition company to knock down walls on the interconnected buildings and continue suppression of the fire.

The building is approximately 125,000 square feet in size and has been deemed structurally unsound. Firefighters must battle the fire from the exterior, which makes it more challenging to get to the seat of the fire. It will take the continuous effort of removing walls and floors by the demolition company, and then firefighters applying water or foam to reduce the amount of fire, heat and smoke.

Citizens are reminded of the air quality advisory issued by Linn County Public Health. The Fire Department continues to work with the Health Department to recommend that citizens, especially those with pre-existing health conditions, limit their outside exposure until the smoke dissipates.
