Curby's and Yardy's present dangers in winter

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The City of Cedar Rapids Solid Waste and Recycling Division is reminding residents not to place garbage cans, recycling bins, CURBY carts or YARDY carts on snow banks.

Putting the containers on snow banks creates a number of hazards for collection crews because it puts their center of gravity above them.  They say crew members have slipped and fallen under trucks while wrestling them down from snow banks.

For this reason, crews have been told not collect garbage cans and bags, CURBY carts and other recycling bins that are put on snow banks.

Instead, residents are urged to place them in the driveway, three feet from the curb.  This allows plows to pass without knocking them over and allows collection crews to get them without being injured.
