New year to mean stricter enforcement of Cedar Rapids code

Posted:

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The start of a new year will mean stricter enforcement of a construction code in Cedar Rapids.

Effective January 1, 2010, the city code enforcement division will increase their enforcement of the construction code that requires property owners to have "approved address numbers, building numbers, unit or suite numbers or approved building identification placed in a position that is legible and visible from the street or road fronting the property".

The stricter enforcement is aimed at improving the quality of city services and emergency response times by reducing the amount of misidentified properties.

The city says that beginning on January 1 they will reject all required inspections for all construction, moving, demolition, remodeling, additions and alterations permits if the correct address on the permit is not posted as required by code.
