Officials discuss tax credits in Eastern Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A panel of state department heads hears a range of public opinion on whether Iowa's tax credits are actually good for the state.

The seven department directors held a meeting Tuesday in Cedar Rapids.

Dubuque's Mayor Roy Buol supports the tax credits.  He says tax breaks helped Dubuque beat out six other cities across the country for an IBM service center that's expected to bring 1,300 jobs to the city.

Peter Fisher, researcher director for the Iowa Policy Project, says the state needs to more clearly separate "good credits from bad credits."  He says bad credits provide open-ended funding to businesses that couldn't survive without state help.

About 200 people attended the meeting.
