Busiest Shipping Day of the Year - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

Busiest Shipping Day of the Year

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- In case you missed the lines - this is the busiest day of the year for shipping.  Monday, December 14th, FedEx is delivering about thirteen million packages.  The United States Post Office reports they'll handle 830 million cards, letters, and boxes on this day alone.  But most people KWWL spoke with, don't mind waiting their turn - as long as their gift arrives on time.

Proud Grandma Loretta Ryan knew full well what to expect before coming to Waterloo's post office.  But what can you say - she's a creature of habit.

Ryan pointed out, "today is our usual errand day!"

Deanna Riess, on the other hand, would have liked to come sooner - she's mailing gifts to her relatives in England.  But that's not how things worked out.

Riess explained, "because I just got everything bought and wrapped over the weekend!"

Post masters told Iowa's News Channel 7, that's what brings most of these customers in Monday afternoon.  The good news is, they're not exactly procrastinators.  They have two more days to mail a Christmas present through the regular mail.

Many gift givers are still taking extra precautions, by choosing Priority Mail or a Flat-Rate Box. Because even though they still have time, they want to make sure their loved ones get their gift by Christmas.

"It'll get there by Wednesday. It only cost $1 more, so yeah, it's really important to us that they get them on time," said Ryan.

After all, you can call your loved ones on Christmas morning.  But it's not the same as ripping open the perfect gift.

"We want to send them a little token of our thoughts," said Riess.

Ryan added, "they always cheer - 'It's from grandma!'"

For Monday's customers, that reaction is worth waiting in line.

The last day for USPS Ground Delivery is Wednesday, December 16th.  Express Delivery can be shipped out as late as the 23rd.

FedEx is taking ground packages as late as Thursday, December 17th for delivery by Christmas Day, but they are offering Same-Day delivery on the 25th.

UPS is accepting ground packages through Wednesday for Christmas delivery.  The deadline for Next-Day Air is the 23rd.
