UI investigates chemistry building illnesses

IOWA CITY (AP) -- University of Iowa officials continue to search for what's causing faculty, staff and students in the Chemistry Building to feel ill.

A task force recently completed a study on the building, but couldn't pinpoint an exact cause. The group will follow up with another report in six months.

The task force was appointed last spring after 11 people complained of health problems, including respiratory symptoms, headaches and short-term memory loss.

Faculty and students took part in forum about the building last Friday. Participants say they are careful with lab practices, but will make sure protocols are followed.

The building, which was built in the 1920s, has been undergoing renovations since 2004.
