UPDATE: Regents approve tuition surcharge

AMES (AP) - The Iowa Board of Regents have approved a $100 tuition surcharge for public university students in an effort to make up budget cuts imposed by Gov. Chet Culver.

The temporary fee to be imposed this spring is part of a plan to cut $58 million in funding from the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa.

The surcharge will increase tuition costs for an Iowa resident to $6,804 this year. It is expected to generate $5.7 million.

Regents board president David Miles calls Thursday's 6-3 vote a "regrettable but reasonable" decision, even though it creates an additional burden for students.

The regents are weighing a plan to increase tuition and fees by an average of 6.5 percent at the three schools. A vote on 2010-11 tuition rates is scheduled for February.
