Holiday blood drives planned

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) – Help the American Red Cross during the 3rd Annual Holiday Blood and Funding Drive. Blood donations, as well as financial donations, will be accepted at the Cedar Rapids Marriott on Thursday, December 17, 2009, from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The annual Holiday Drive is highlighted by a festive atmosphere with food donated from area restaurants, door prize drawings throughout the day, and a free pie for all presenting blood donors. The drive will feature displays of all aspects of local Red Cross services including: disaster services, health and safety training, blood donation, and volunteer services.

A gift of any size to the American Red Cross will save the day when the next disaster strikes. When a neighbor's house burns down. When someone needs lifesaving blood transfusion. When a family needs to contact a deployed service member in an emergency. Each gift supports the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross in your community, across the country and around the world.

Donating blood or platelets is a simple way to give hope to patients in need. While the need for blood is ongoing, the supply isn't – especially around the holidays due to travel plans and inclement weather. The blood supply is currently sufficient, but the need for blood and platelets is constant – that's why it's so important to donate regularly.

Giving blood is easy. It only takes about an hour, and a single donation can help save up to three lives. Give to someone in immediate need – it could be a friend, a neighbor, or a stranger. To make an appointment, call 319-393-3500 or visit today. Walk-ins are welcome.

How to Donate Blood

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Eligible donors can call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE or go online to for more information and to make a blood donation appointment.
