UNI Dome collapse years ago - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

UNI Dome collapse years ago

If you live in Iowa this time of year you should expect snow and ice.

But sometimes it catches us by surprise.

That was certainly the case 15 years ago today in Cedar Falls.

That day, the UNI Dome deflated for the third time in its history.

Accumulation of water from melting snow and ice on the canvas roof caused it to tear.

Strong winds then ripped a triangular hole in it.

The roof was reinflated ten days later.

The UNI Dome now has a steel roof - much stronger.
