Truck stop traffic jam during blizzard

ELK RUN HEIGHTS (KWWL) - The storm has caused something of a traffic jam near eastern Iowa truck stops and rest areas. Many truckers have deadlines to get their goods to their destinations but this storm is causing a delay. Whiteout conditions have forced many to pull over and wait for conditions to improve. Plaza Drive between Evansdale and Elk Run Heights is more like a parking lot. Semis line both sides of the road - leaving one lane for travel. With blizzard conditions continuing, the backup is expected to last into Thursday. Truckers say it's a good place to stop.

"We have food here, a warm place to come in case something happens to my truck, you know I can hang out here. Out there on the road, I got nothing," said truck driver Brian McKinney.

Meantime, rural roads in Black Hawk County weren't in the greatest shape Wednesday afternoon but around Raymond, plows had come through and cleared a path. Still, drifting is the biggest problem. Just when you think you have a clear path, you'll come across a big drift in the roadway. Road crews in Waterloo say they plan to get to neighborhood streets Wednesday night.
