Driving & winter conditions in Eastern Iowa

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- An intense snowstorm has forced the closure of part of Interstate 80 through Iowa, and snowplows have been pulled from a stretch of Interstate 35.

Drivers are advised to stay off the roads in many parts of Eastern Iowa.

So far, the Iowa DOT has pulled plows off I-35 from Elkhart to Dows because of poor visibility and threatening weather.

The Transportation Department also stopped plowing more than 60 miles of Interstate 35 through central Iowa because the freeway was impassable due to blowing snow.

The Iowa State Patrol is advising people not to travel in much of southwest, central and northeast Iowa.

Cedar Rapids crews say they are now plowing residential streets as they have finished plowing most of the main roads.

The Public Works manager says the snow is packed with ice so there are many slick spots.

City officials say they have already used 25 tons of salt and sand.

Statewide, more than 300 school districts have closed or declared weather emergencies.

Also there will be no garbage pick-up in Waterloo until Friday.
