Livestock Farmers Prepare for Storm

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa's Secretary of Agriculture is reminding farmers to prepare for spending a few days without power this winter by stocking up on supplies.

Bill Northey recommends farmers keep plenty of feed and water on-hand for livestock, and ensure their generator is in good working condition.  During a severe winter storm, farmers should closely monitor the health and safety of their livestock.

If you need generators to power environmental controls and supply water, contact the Iowa Concern Hotline at 1 (800) 447-1985.  Farmers should contact their local Farm Service Administration office if you have any storm-related damage, livestock losses, or critical needs.

Northey added, "Farmers are experts in dealing with weather challenges, but planning ahead helps make sure you are able to deal with the unexpected."
