Fire damaged Cedar Rapids home

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) – An afternoon fire damaged a single-story residence at 1710 Apache Trail NW.

Cedar Rapids Fire says they were called to the scene at 2:49 p.m. when Alex Phillips, age 21, the homeowners' son, reported a basement fire.

Fire crews made entry through the front door of the house and encountered light smoke. They progressed to the home's basement and found that thick, black smoke had filled the basement of the dwelling. Firefighters used an Argus camera to locate a closed bedroom door where most of the heat was generated. The firefighters opened the door and found a mattress on fire, which they quickly extinguished.

There was fire and heat damage to the bedroom, and smoke damage to the entire basement. No injuries were reported.

The house is owned by Craig and Ella Phillips, who were not home at the time of the fire.

An investigation by the Fire Department determined that the occupant was using a propane torch prior to the fire that ignited a mattress on fire in the bedroom. The occupant was outside shoveling snow when he noticed smoke in the house and called 911.
