Family displaced by weekend fire

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Seven members of a Cedar Rapids family were displaced when a weekend fire erupted in the kitchen of their home.

Firefighter found heavy smoke and fire when they arrived at the scene early Sunday. Fire Department spokesman Greg Buelow says the first crews to arrive found most of the fire behind the stove and refrigerator, and spreading to nearby cabinets.

Buelow says the residents of the home, Chris and Erica Gehrke, where able to flee with their five children, ranging in age from one to eight years old, before firefighters arrived. Two cats also escaped the blaze.

Buelow says fire investigators found a non-functioning smoke alarm near the kitchen.

Officials on Monday said the American Red Cross was assisting the Gehrke family. Investigators has yet to determine the cause of the fire.
