Hawks to play Georgia Tech in Orange Bowl

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The Hawkeyes BCS dreams have come true, however, the game they got, wasn't the one they had been expecting.  Originally thought to have a lock on the Fiesta Bowl, Iowa was selected for the Orange Bowl, where they will play ACC champion Georgia Tech.

The Hawks, winners of their first 9 games, faltered winning just one of the final three after an injury which sidelined Ricky Stanzi for the remainder of the regular season.  Iowa's BCS hopes were bolstered Saturday night, when Texas rallied in the final seconds to beat Nebraska, opening up another spot in a BCS game.

"Obviously we're thrilled to death. We were very excited to get the news today," said head coach Kirk Ferentz, "We're very appreciative to the folks at the FedEx Orange Bowl for the faith that they've put in us. We're excited to be matched up with a tremendous football team."

"The reaction was nothing too crazy.  Had we not been in that bowl, the reaction might have been greater," added senior linebacker A.J. Edds, "but I think we all thought we deserved it.  We thought we played well enough through the course of the season and we were able to put ourselves in that position in the end, and we were happy it paid off."

Iowa's only other Orange Bowl appearance was in 2003 when the third ranked Hawks fell against number 5 USC.
