Donation intended to continue doctor's work

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa State University President Greg Geoffroy says ISU will probably be required to eliminate some of its departments and programs to meet its long-term budget goals.

Geoffroy wrote in an e-mail sent to faculty and staff earlier this week that the university has lost $69.2 million in state appropriations in the last 16 months. He said that although federal stimulus dollars have made up for some of the lost money, those funds will expire in the next several months.

Geoffroy said that the restructuring will take place in what he called a "strategic multiyear fashion," beginning immediately.

He said more details about the planning process will be forthcoming and there would be a clearer picture of the coming year's state contributions after the Revenue Estimating Conference on Dec. 11.
