Johnson County considers cutting library funds

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Johnson County officials say they are looking for money-saving alternatives to funding six libraries.

In fiscal year 2010, the county provided $607,811 to libraries in Iowa City, Coralville, Oxford, Solon, North Liberty and Tiffin. County supervisors say they expect funding costs will be even higher for fiscal year 2011 because of the sour economy.

The rising costs are a concern at a time when supervisors asked each of its 26 departments to reduce by 2 percent their fiscal year 2011 budget requests to the board.

Supervisor Terrence Neuzil says one option could be to designate one rural library and then rural residents could pay if they choose to check out items from another library.

Johnson County officials say further discussion about possibly changing the county's rural library designations will come after the budget process is complete.
