Ferentz and Barta lobby for BCS bowl bid

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Kirk Ferentz has changed his tune.  During the end of the regular season he said he wouldn't talk about whether or not Iowa deserved a BCS bowl, and that it would just work itself out.

Now he's ready to get behind Iowa's effort to secure a bid, most likely to the fiesta bowl.

The Hawks currently rank 9th in the BCS standings.  Penn State is their biggest competition for the game.  Both Ferentz and Athletic Director Gary Barta point out the Hawkeyes beat the Nittany Lions on their home field earlier this season.

"Head to head we were fortunate enough to come out on top at their place.  We certainly have made sure everyone is reminded of that," says Barta, "but beyond that, we're talking about the strengths of Iowa.  We're talking about our fans travelling, television ratings, our history in bowl games, and focusing on what we would bring as opposed to what someone else might not."

"We did beat 6 bowl eligible teams.  Two of them were non-conference games, " adds Ferentz, "I thought our guys did a great job of taking a very challenging road schedule and embracing it."

Selection for the BCS bowls takes place Sunday at 7:00 pm.
