Trial date set for stabbing suspect

BURLINGTON (AP)--A trial date has been set for a Burlington man accused of trying to take a bicycle from a 12-year-old and then stabbing someone who tried to intervene.

District Court Judge Michael Schilling set a trial date of Jan. 5 for Derrick Edwards, who is charged with first-degree robbery.

Police say Edwards asked the 12-year-old for a ride on the bicycle in late September, and the boy refused. Edwards allegedly threatened him with a knife.

A man in a nearby house, Robert Asher, witnessed the exchange and confronted Edwards, who allegedly began punching him in the face.

Police say when Asher tried to run, Edwards stabbed him in the leg.

Edwards attempted to flee police, but was arrested after a foot chase.
