More eBooks available at Iowa City Public Library

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  The Iowa City Public Library has expanded its downloadable collection with the addition of EPUB eBooks at From the comfort of home, ICPL card holders can browse the collection, check out, and download eBooks and more anytime, anywhere.

"EPUB is the future of eBook reading and we are excited to offer the new format," said Kara Logsden, Adult Services Coordinator at ICPL.

"We have dozens of best-selling titles available and they are all compatible with the Sony® Reader."

The Library's opening collection features 170 eBooks by popular authors such as David Sedaris, Neil Gaiman, Paulo Coelho, James Patterson, Barbara Kingsolver, Ayn Rand, Stephenie Meyer, Kurt Vonnegut and more.

Similar to Adobe PDF eBooks, EPUB eBooks can be read on a PC or Mac® using the free, reader software Adobe® Digital Editions, and are also compatible with the Sony® Reader. EPUB features reflowable text and interactive graphic options, including the ability to resize the text and alter the display to fit any size screen. The Sony® Reader, designed to look and feel like a book, is great for users on the go. The device holds hundreds of eBooks and features EINK technology, a screen that reads like paper so it's easy on the reader's eyes.

To check out titles, users need a valid Iowa City Public Library card, computer, and Internet connection. Once downloaded, digital media can be enjoyed on a computer and transferred to supported portable devices such as the Sony® Reader. At the end of the loan period, titles automatically expire and are returned to the Library's online collection. Users may return Adobe PDF and EPUB eBooks early.

Downloadable EPUB eBooks are available free of charge to residents of Iowa City, rural Johnson County, University Heights and Hills. ICPL's Overdrive service area will expand to offer eBook titles to Coralville residents in February 2010.

Facebook and Twitter ‘Share' Functionality Now Available

To provide users of the Iowa City Public Library's download service a more interactive experience, the Library has added the functionality to post details about a title downloaded from Overdrive to the social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

Postings on Facebook will include a brief description of a title, jacket cover, URL to a title's details page on, as well as an optional personal comment. Twitter posts will include a brief "tweet" on downloading the book from, as well as a link to ICPL's downloadable collection.

In addition to downloading eBooks, by visiting, you can choose from more than 1,300 eAudio books to enjoy on your computer, iPod®, or MP3 player, and some audio titles can be burned to CD. All you need is an Internet connection and a valid Iowa City Public Library card. Mobile device-optimized browsing, searching and checkout of Overdrive audio books also is available free of charge to cardholders who reside in Iowa City, rural Johnson County, University Heights and Hills. This service will also be available to Coralville residents in February 2010.
