Dubuque Black Friday recap

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Here in Eastern Iowa, thousands braved the cold temps, camping out overnight hoping to land some great deals. We caught up with some shoppers in Dubuque this morning.

As Michael Bockhop sits on this bench inside Kennedy Mall. He feels no guilt that his wife is doing all the shopping.

"I'm waiting for them to get done running in and out of stores. I had knee surgery so my walking's not very good right now," said Bockhop.

Its a family tradition to shop on Black Friday.

"I don't mind getting the deals but it's kinda nice sitting right here just watching everybody else walk," said Bockhop.

Early Friday morning hundreds lined up outside Kennedy Mall but this year the crowd is different.

"Last year we saw the big rush all at once. This year we're seeing a very steady customers through out the day," said Marketing Director Cindy Kohlman.

Shoppers like Melinda Meyer and Jackie Piper, who've made Kennedy Mall as stop on their well planned route.

"6:30 we went to Target. We were there for two and a half hours. We took a break and now we're gonna start shopping the mall," said Meyers.

Meanwhile over at Kohl's on the westside, the parking lot is packed and door revolving.

"It was a madhouse. I found a bench and sat there. I stood in line to get a d's for an hour," said a shopper.

Shoppers tell us they spend anywhere from $100 to $1,000, purchasing as many as 30 items.

Early crowds indicate success for local retailers, whether its a stop on a well planned route. Or waiting on a bench until someone else finishes shopping. Black Friday means getting a start on Christmas shopping.

"We just have seen a lot of folks out here shopping and shopping for some good bargains," said Kohlman.

There was quite a traffic jam at Kennedy Mall last year, Kohlman says improvements in the parking lot will help this year. Extra traffic patrol will be on hand all season.
