SPOC members vote to save 43 jobs

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The State Police Officers Council announced today that their members have voted to approve an understanding that will save 43 state jobs.

The jobs saved include 20 state troopers, 20 gaming enforcement officers, 1 fire inspector and 2 special agents in the Division of Narcotics Enforcement and protects them from layoffs until June 30, 2010.

The jobs were facing being cut because of Governor Culver's 10% across the board budget cuts.

SPOC President Mark Bowlin and Governor Culver will sign a Memorandum of Understanding next week that binds each side to the provisions of the measure approved by SPOC membership.

The agreement means that all 640 SPOC members will take 5 days off without pay and forego the state match to their retirement.

In other departments, 3,500 non-contract employees are taking 7 days off without pay and all agency directors are taking a 10% pay cut.
