Downtown cars will be towed during holiday shopping season

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The city of Cedar Rapids will begin to tow and impound vehicles belonging to individuals who do not pay their parking tickets.

City officials say they are doing this to improve management of the city's downtown parking spaces and to provide the spaces needed for shoppers and visitors to downtown. Towing will begin Monday.

Anyone who has five of more unpaid citations and parks on a city street, lot or parkade, may have their vehicle towed and impounded. The vehicle can be re-claimed once all citations and late fees are paid. There will also be a towing charge of $45 by the city's towing contractor. Additional fees may be incurred if the vehicle is not reclaimed within 24 hours.
