Deemer trial may go to jury today

DAKOTA CITY (AP) -- A psychologist says a man charged with killing his estranged wife and her boyfriend was addicted to methamphetamine and other drugs when he shot the pair along a road near Marshalltown.

Dr. John Fabian was the only witness called to testify in defense of Kyle Deemer, a 29-year-old from West Des Moines. Deemer is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of his 24-year-old wife Jessica Deemer and 24-year-old Bryce Mercer.

Fabian also testified Monday that Deemer might suffer from a personality disorder.

Defense lawyers contend Deemer was high on meth and didn't have the mindset required for a first-degree murder conviction. Fagian says he also used cocaine, marijuana and alcohol.

Lawyers will give closing arguments Monday and the case will go to the jury.
