University of Iowa's new lab almost ready

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- The University of Iowa's new hygienic laboratory is almost finished.

The $38 million lab in Coralville is scheduled to be completed by April. It will replace the existing facility, which was built in 1917.

Lab Director Christopher Atchison says the new building was supposed to be completed this fall, but was delayed by heavy rain and changes to the plan.

The new lab has plenty of windows, a 40-foot tall atrium and environmentally friendly features.

The lab analyzes biological and environmental samples. Staffing won't expand with the new building -- it will remain at 180 employees.
