Sweet Tooth: Kathy's Kakes in Independence

by Danielle Wagner

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) Kathy Finholt didn't grow up knowing she wanted to bake cakes for a living, but she did always have a love for baking thanks to her grandma.

"She let us experiment in her kitchen quite a bit, and I remember going with her to the hardware store and seeing a beginning cake decorator kit, and I saved up my babysitting money to buy it," said Kathy Finholt.

Finholt's home business began in 1992 when a local balloon shop needed a new cake decorator.

From two to three cakes a month, now Finholt and her employee Susie bake full-time.

Kathy's Kakes in Independence makes all kinds of treats from cake balls to cupcakes to cookies, but her specialty is wedding cakes. Kathy's Kakes bakes two to four cakes per week.

But Finholt said her busiest month is typically May because of weddings and graduation.

"I've got graduations booked through 2017," she said.

Finholt said brides these days want more colorful cakes. Some of her most unique wedding designs include a haunted house cake and a "red neck" cake.

Her goal is to give the bride exactly what she wants.

"My worst fear would be for a bride to be upset on her wedding day, so we do anything possible to get exactly what's ordered. I love hearing afterwards it was exactly what I was picturing," said Finholt.

Kathy Finholt also makes gluten free cakes, and her least favorite part about cake baking is doing the dishes.
