Cedar Rapids shelter getting new playground

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Kids staying at the Willis Dady Emergency Shelter in Cedar Rapids will soon have a new place to play thanks to the work of volunteers.

On Saturday, November 21, 2009, community volunteers will join with staff and board members from the shelter to erect a new playground.

Installation of the new equipment will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the shelter located at 1247 4th Avenue SE.

The more than 1,200 square foot play area is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2010 with a fence and other security measures.

Funding for the playground came through grants from the AEGON/Transamerica Foundation and Variety – The Children’s Charity of Iowa. Funds will continue to be raised throughout the next several months.

The Willis Dady Emergency shelter opened in 1987 and houses families and single men.  The shelter has served over 10,000 individuals and provides around 9,000 shelter nights a year.
