Money for the 350 Cedar Valley homeless

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- "Stomp on Homelessness" event raises money for the Cedar Valley Homelessness Coalition.

Outside the Salvation Army , a group of volunteers sat on plastic buckets by a fire while thumbing through their phones' contact list.

"Just calling cause I'm homeless tonight..."  one volunteer says into his phone before he asks for a donation.

Each volunteer needed to raise, or they were sleeping outside tonight.

According to the Cedar Valley Homelessness Coalition, 350 people in the Cedar Valley are homeless.

"My waiting list has over 138 women and children on it... all the agencies are filled to the brim.  There's no available housing anywhere.  We're almost in desperate times here," Christian Community Development Executive Director Mary Schmitt said.

The Christian Community Development is one of the four organizations that combat homelessness in the Cedar Valley.  The other three organizations that make up the coalition include the Salvation Army, Community Housing Initiative, and Black Hawk Grundy Mental Health.

As of Friday night, the Homelessness Coalition was still unsure how many volunteers would be participating.
