State tourney helps Cedar Rapids economy

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The state volleyball tournament kicked off in Cedar Rapids Wednesday. The tournament not only provides lasting memories for many high school athletes and their families, but also provides a big economic boost to the area.

According to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, last year 33,500 people attended the tournament. The Cedar Rapids Visitor's Bureau says those people spent more than 2-million dollars in the Cedar Rapids area.

In 2007 -- more than 31,000 people attended the tournament and spent 1.8 million dollars.

This year they're not projecting a number of fans that will attend, but hope more than 2 million dollars will be spent -- this would mean more than 30 million has been spent in the Cedar Rapids area since the tournament moved there in 1991.
