Veterans event a 1st in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) - People across the country, and even the world stop Wednesday to remember those who have served their country.

There are activities going on all across eastern Iowa, including one that's a first in Waterloo.

At the Veterans Memorial Hall, it was the women who were the focus.
World War II vet Marcia Courbat organized the event.

Women from every branch of service attended and even had the chance to talk about their time in the service.

Women have played an important role in every war and conflict the United States has been involved in.

Marcia Courbat said, "The biggest thing is this Memorial Hall has never had this many people in a long time. It makes me feel good, being part of it, and being able to put on a program that was a success."

Courbat says she wanted to honor women this year because the number of World War II women veterans are disappearing rapidly.

There will be a special ceremony at the Memorial Hall Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.

The neon sign for the hall will be lit up for the first time in a very long time, a project that has been in the works for months.
