Town offers discount for outside holiday lights

STRAWBERRY POINT (KWWL) Some people are taking advantage of the nice November weather to put up holiday lights. The City of Strawberry Point is giving people some extra incentive to "deck the halls."

The city is offering a $10 holiday lighting discount.

"Just a little bit of a good will gesture just to get people brought into the Christmas spirit," said Mark Meyer with public works.

To qualify, you must put up at least 200 lights on the outside of your house. The lights need to be visible from the street.

"Basically the main thing we're after is for passersby to get more of a view of the holiday spirit so we're gunning for people to put on the front property and 200 is the minimum, but by all means we encourage as many as you would possibly want," said Meyer.

People said the cash back is definitely an added incentive.

"We took advantage of it just for the $10 off. The electric bill gets kind of high. Every little bit helps out," said resident Steve Barton.

Besides saving people money, the goal is to help beautify this small town for the holiday season.

"A city of 1400 people, if we can keep it close knit it kind of makes us feel more homey to anybody passing through," said Meyer.

The rebate was re-instated last year, and 70 people in the community took part. The city hopes more people learn about it this year and sign up. To qualify for the rebate, you need to fill out a form at city hall by December 15.
