Former Yankee pitcher visits the Cedar Valley

WATERLOO (KWWL)--A New York Yankees pitcher was in Waterloo Saturday.

Tri-yearly, a group of Cedar Valley fans called the Pinstripe Faithfuls held a blue bat baseball card show at the National Cattle Congress.  For one of the three exposés, they invite a New York Yankee to sign autographs.

This year’s guest was the relief pitcher Ryne Duren. Duren played from 1958 to 1961.  The five time All Star player pitched 100 miles per hour.

He signed not only cards and baseballs but his book called, I Can See Clearly Now.

The title refers to several of his life struggles. In his youth, he had bad cataracts and an alcohol addiction.  With cataract surgery and overcoming his alcoholic habits, Duren literally and metaphorically sees better than in his professional days.  Intertwined in these struggles are stories of life as a Yankee.
