Raising $77,000 for vets memorial

SOLON (KWWL) -- Solon's American Legion has been working for more than a year and a half to create a memorial for local veterans.

Saturday was a fundraiser for the $190,000 project.

The memorial will include 4 stones with local veteran’s names, an arch, and a stone for Prisoners Of War (POW) and Missing in Action (MIA) soldiers.

"The whole idea of this is to honor people who have served our country so we've gone back as far back as the civil war in some cases to put veteran names on there to recognize their service," American Legion member Pete Engledow said.

The memorial stands incomplete without the arch and the POI-MIA stone.

Before the fundraiser, they still needed $77,000 to finish the project.

Saturday’s fundraiser included a silent auction, a raffle, a bake sale, and an auction.
