Buddy Check Seven Part Two

WATERLOO (KWWL) Christine Carpenter said every woman is at risk for breast cancer. According to the National Breast Cancer Coalition, more than 70 percent of women with breast cancer have no known risk factors.

Carpenter said she was one of those women when she was diagnosed in 1993.

"I did everything right, and I still got cancer," said Christine Carpenter.

Now Carpenter is an advocate, hoping to ultimately prevent cancer. Carpenter founded Iowa Breast Cancer Edu-Action. The group is now a subcommittee for the Beyond Pink TEAM, which is a local organization devoted to helping cancer victims.

"We're all volunteers. One hundred percent of the money stays in the Cedar Valley," said Carpenter.

She said Iowa Breast Cancer Edu-Action is working to raise awareness in minorities.

"Actually it's slightly less prevalent than in European-American women, but it's more deadly," said Carpenter.

In 1997, the group put together a resource guide for women suffering from breast cancer.

"We talked about what we wished we had had so we put it in the Iowa Breast Cancer Resource Guide. We found funding and we distributed it free throughout Iowa," she said.

She's happy more resources are now available, but she's hoping they won't be needed. Carpenter hopes her daughter and future generations won't have to go through breast cancer.

"I'm not doing this to save myself. I'm doing this to save the lives of the next generations."
