Red light cameras proving unpopular

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - More than 400 cities in the US are using red light and traffic-camera machines to enforce traffic laws. They'll be arriving soon in Cedar Rapids.

But the cameras are proving to be unpopular with citizens in cities that have them. Tuesday, three cities voted to remove red light cameras. And in 11 elections nationwide, all eleven have voted the cameras out.

But supporters say they help to reduce crashes and remind drivers to obey speed limits. The Cedar Rapids Streets Department says eight intersections are being considered for cameras, which will be installed in the coming weeks.
