Drivers hit bobcats on Iowa roads

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) -- Add bobcats to the list of roadkill turning up on Iowa highways.

Officials say several bobcats have been struck by drivers in southwest Iowa recently.

Brian Smith is the Pottawattamie County game warden for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. He says he has had three bobcats hit by cars in Council Bluffs just in the last three weeks.

The latest happened on Monday. The male bobcat was 3 feet long and weighed about 40 pounds.

Officials test each animal to estimate the reproduction rate and population of the state's bobcats.

Bobcat hunting season starts on Saturday in Iowa. It continues until Jan. 10 or until the statewide limit of 200 is reached.
