WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Talking with kids about H1N1 can be difficult. Here are a few tips from the Iowa Department of Public Health:
- First, try to keep your life as consistent and normal as possible, even if the normal routine changes because of the flu.
-- Ask your kids what they've heard about the flu, and answer their questions openly and honestly at a level they can understand.
-- Allow your kids to express their feelings and concerns openly. Let them know it's ok to be afraid or mad.
-- Encourage healthy behaviors: eating well, sleeping well, and playing outside if it's possible.
-- Finally, focus on what your child can do to avoid getting the flu -- like hand washing, covering our mouths when we sneeze or cough, not sharing food and drinks and staying home when we're sick.
