Iowa hospital puts patient donations on hold

IOWA CITY (AP)--The University of Iowa has put a patient donation plan on hold.

Some employees and state lawmakers criticized the plan to ask outpatients at University Hospitals to sign a consent form allowing them to be contacted about making donations.

Jean Robillard, vice president for medical affairs, says officials want more time to hear from staff and others who have concerns as well as suggestions for improving the program.

No timeline has been set for refining or resuming the plan.

Medical industry officials say it's common for hospitals to make philanthropic appeals to patients.

Rep. Jeff Kauffmann, a Republican from Wilton, has called the plan "tacky."
