UPDATED: Iowa City voter turnout lowest in 30 years

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- As of 11 a.m., the Johnson County Auditor says the voter turnout in Iowa City was the lowest its been in 30 years.

Only 933 voters, or 1.93 percent, were at the polls before 11 a.m. The Johnson County Auditor says in 1985, which currently holds the record for the lowest turnout in the past 30 years, 1,108 voters had visited the polls by 11 a.m.

Early voting was also low, with only 1,065 ballots returned by 6 p.m. Monday. Iowa City voters cast 2,017 early ballots in 1999.

University Heights is seeing the highest percentage turnout in the county with 105 voters, or 13.17 percent, at the polls by 11 a.m.

Polls are open until 8 p.m. in Johnson County and eligible voters can register at the polls with a photo ID and proof of address.
