Deadly MRSA strain

Antibiotic-resistant staph infections called MRSA can be difficult to treat, but are usually susceptible to powerful antibiotics.

Now doctors at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit have identified a particularly deadly MRSA strain called USA-600.

They say half of patients who become infected with the strain die within 30 days -- compared with 11-percent of patients infected with other MRSA strains.

USA-600 also appears to have some resistance to strong antibiotics often reserved for MRSA infections.
