Phelps Youth Pavilion wins Iowa Tourism Award

WATERLOO (KWWL) - The Phelps Youth Pavilion at the Waterloo Center for the Arts was recognized with the 2009 Tourism and the Arts Award. The Pavilion competed with major art events and attractions throughout the state, and submissions were judged on several criteria including outstanding performance, partnership between tourism and the arts, economic impact, marketing, and involvement in tourism initiatives.

"There are so many wonderful cultural attractions throughout Iowa that we are truly honored to be chosen as the "best of the best"," said Shannon Farlow, marketing/development director. Since opening for school tours in February 2008 and to the public in April 2009, the Pavilion has welcomed more than 48,000 visitors from 32 states and 12 countries to explore and experience their cross-section of art and culture. Visitors have enjoyed daily admission, memberships, school and adult tours, birthday parties, and private Pavilion parties. It has exceeded the expectations of many and more than proved to be a unique local and tourist attraction for the state of Iowa and the entire Midwest.

The Pavilion's innovations and offerings have also been recognized with several other local and regional awards, including the Building of America Award, UNI's American Humanics Nonprofit Award, Cedar Valley Tourism Attraction of the Year, and the Nickelodeon's Parents' Picks Award for Best Art Class in the Des Moines area.

The Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa presented 19 awards to industry members during the recent 2009 Iowa Tourism Conference in Tama. The Cedar Valley also brought home two other awards, with the City of Cedar Falls winning "Community of the Year (population more than 10,000)" and Senator Jeff Danielson of Cedar Falls winning the "Iowa Legislative Friend of Tourism".
