Historic Dubuque church to close

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) -- A historic church that has served generations of Catholics in the Dubuque area will close next year because of declining membership and growing debt.

Parishioners of St. Mary's Catholic Church learned on Saturday that the church will close and their parish will disband after 150 years. The closure will happen in May or June.

The Rev. Steven Rosonke told parishioners during Mass on Saturday that Dubuque Archbishop Jerome Hanus had accepted the parish council's recommendation to close the parish.

The parish is $160,000 in debt, and faces $2.5 million in maintenance needs for parish buildings.

St. Mary's will join the list of archdiocesan churches that have closed in the past five years. Sixteen have shut down since 2004.
